In Ribeiro, you’re not visiting, you’re being welcomed in. At Bodega Son de Arrieiro, Xulia Bande walks you through her vineyards before opening her home for a long, easy lunch that feels more like slipping into her world than observing it from the outside.

At Anónimas Viticultoras, a quietly radical, female-led collective, the story shifts. Here, you walk the vines with the women reshaping Spanish wine, hear it in their own words, then sit down together over a table that stretches as long as the conversation.

Wine is only part of it. In Ourense, a private guide threads you through stone streets and steaming thermal waters, while at Punta Faxilda, myth and landscape blur in that way only locals really know how to explain.

And then, the night everything tilts: the Bonfire of St John. Not watched, but joined. Fires flicker across the beaches by dusk, each one lit for luck, love or letting go. You’re meant to jump them, a slightly reckless leap toward renewal, best judged after a glass or two.

It’s part ritual, part revelry. The Atlantic hums in the background, smoke drifts into a violet sky and somewhere between grilled sardines passed hand to hand and strangers daring each other closer to the flames, it all loosens. By midnight, you’re lighter, whether from fire, wine or something harder to name.

Your host for the trip is author, comedian and Australian institution Kathy Lette loves hiking as much as wine and so is incorporating both in hosting this trip to Galicia – along with her inimitable wit and warmth, guaranteeing great conversation and food for thought along the way.

‘What do women like most? I’d say, talking and walking, quipping and quaffing,’ she says. ‘The best thing about this trip is that we get to do all those things simultaneously. Exciting adventures, both physical and historical, are balanced out with unique boutique vineyard experiences. Plus, all that exercise makes for guilt-free gourmandising. So here’s cheers! Hotel Virxe da Cerca by Pousadas Compostela: Your first hotel is a converted 18th-century Jesuit residence which combines a blend of historical charm, a serene, central base for exploring Santiago de Compostela. Escape the city with a coffee or glass of wine in its tranquil garden and enjoy the work of local artists rotated around the hotel without even leaving the building.

Pazo Los Escudos Hotel & Spa Resort is a stunning second 5-star stop on the beach in Bouzas. This converted Galician manor house (‘pazo’) is a short taxi ride from Vigo’s city centre and has stunning gardens with gated entrance onto the beach and spa with hot tub, sauna, hammam, indoor pool and outdoor pool (open in season – and during our trip!).

Gran Hotel Nagari Boutique & Spa is located in a historic building designed by renowned architect Manuel Gómez Román in 1960. Today it retains its imposing, listed façade but inside has been entirely renovated to create an eclectic and elegantly contemporary interior and is perfectly situated for exploring Vigo, but in a quiet enough location to feel secluded. There’s a gym, hot tub, sauna, and Turkish bath and rooftop Skyline Pool and spa circuit with panoramic views of the Vigo estuary – and a tapas terrace perfect for cocktails.
